Head Start is a high-quality Pre-K program that facilitates young children’s learning through experience. The program runs from August/September to June and is offered at 14 locations around Kalamazoo County. Head Start provides children with learning activities that focus on social/emotional, physical, and intellectual growth, as well as early math and literacy skills.
It also offers services for the families of enrolled children. These services support parents in their role as a child’s first teacher since doing so helps to strengthen family ties. Head Start focuses on the developmental needs of the child and family. Program options include half day and full day programming Monday – Thursday, and school day programming Monday - Friday. Availability of program options varies by site. Kalamazoo RESA Head Start provides bus transportation to many sites.
In order to be eligible, children must be 3 or 4 years old by December 1st of the program year. Children who turn 3 or 4 years old by September 1 will be enrolled as soon as a spot is available, while children who turn 3 or 4 between September 1 and December 1 will be enrolled beginning September 1.
