Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE)

Early Childhood Special Education provides specialized preschool instruction and services for children ages 3–5 who have significant developmental delays or disabilities.

KRESA’s Early Childhood Special Education program offers center-based preschool classes tailored to young children who need intensive support in areas such as communication, learning, behavior, or motor development. Our ECSE classes are a nurturing, inclusive environment where children with special needs can learn and grow with the help of skilled teachers and therapists.

The West Campus ECSE program is a dedicated preschool setting designed for children who have more significant needs that benefit from a smaller class size, specialized instruction, and therapeutic supports. Each child in the program has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) with specific goals. Our ECSE classes have a low student-to-teacher ratio, and are staffed by certified early childhood special education teachers plus paraprofessionals/teaching aides. We also have specialists (such as speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, school psychologists, and social workers) who work with the children as needed, either in the classroom or in short pull-out sessions, according to each child’s IEP.

How to Obtain Services

All children in ECSE come through a referral and evaluation process. If you believe your 3- or 4-year-old might need special education preschool, the first step is to contact PET or your local school district’s special education department.

What to Expect

An ECSE classroom looks a lot like a regular preschool classroom, with play centers, story time, art, music, and outdoor play, but with extra support and adaptive techniques to help children with special needs participate and learn. Our staff works collaboratively across disciplines to address the whole child. We also integrate opportunities for our ECSE students to interact with typically-developing peers when possible.
