Assistive Technology Team

The Kalamazoo County-Wide Assistive Technology Team helps students with disabilities access learning through technology.

Our team provides AT (Assistive Technology) and AAT (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) evaluations, device loans, training, and support across all schools in Kalamazoo County. We support school staff in selecting, obtaining and implementing assistive technology that helps students access and participate in educational activities.

Our Services

AT/AAC Consultations & Evaluations

Our consultants observe the student, talk with the teacher and parents, and evaluate the student’s needs. We consider all areas: mobility, seating, computer access, reading/writing, communication, etc. Then we identify tools or strategies that could be most supportive.

Equipment Trials & Loans

We maintain Our lending library of assistive tech devices with a range of AT and AAC equipment (from simple switches and adapted toys to high-tech communication devices). Based on an evaluation, we often loan a device or tool to the student’s team for a trial period.

Training and Coaching

Our AT specialists train school staff, students, and families on how to use assistive tools effectively.

Integration in the Classroom

Our team also helps integrate AT solutions into the daily curriculum. We collaborate with general and special education teachers to modify lesson materials so they are accessible.
