YAP Choir Recognized as Honored Guests at the Alliance for DisAbility Awareness Benefit Dinner
The Kalamazoo RESA Young Adult Program (YAP) Choir traveled to Dearborn on Thursday, February 1, as the guests of honor at the Alliance for DisAbility Awareness Benefit Dinner where they received a $6,400 donation.
A University of Michigan organization, the Alliance for DisAbility Awareness provides educational and social opportunities relating to the interests of students with disabilities, as well as promotes awareness and encourages a focus on their abilities.
“For a lot of our students, they’ve never travelled to Detroit, or stayed in a hotel so they are really excited. And they don’t have to pay for anything during the trip, between the donation and what the program has offered, everything is covered,” explained Corlis Watkins, YAP Choir leader.
The YAP Choir aims to teach students the skills that they will need to participate in group activities, such as choirs and clubs out in the community, as well as the necessary social skills to participate in such group settings.
However, for the students, the Choir means much more.
“Singing is like a stress reliever is so many ways. I love to get out how I feel through songs. Where is the Love is a big song for me,” said Lucian, a student at YAP.
“Music calms me down when I’m angry or sad. I put in headphones and listen to music and it brings me up, and fills me with joy,” explained YAP student Joyce.
Congratulations to the Young Adult Program and YAP Choir!
