Gary Brown to step down from Board; applications to fill his seat are being accepted now.
The Kalamazoo RESA Board of Education regretfully accepted the resignation of Board Secretary Gary Brown Thursday, Sept. 15. Brown joined the Board in 2003, replacing Gayl Werme. His resignation is effective Nov. 30, 2016.
“In my nearly 14 years as a board member, it has been my privilege to work with a strong and dedicated board and three outstanding superintendents,” Brown wrote in his resignation letter. “Over those years, I have seen Kalamazoo RESA grow and develop into a vital part of our educational community.”
Brown served as the Mayor of Portage for six years, and he chaired the Kalamazoo RESA Foundation, where he currently serves as vice chair. He was also the past president of the Kalamazoo County Board of Realtors. In 2015, Brown earned a Level 2 Award of Merit from the Michigan Association of School Boards.
“Gary has left a strong mark on Kalamazoo RESA,” said KRESA Superintendent David Campbell. “I have a great deal of respect for Gary and his vision for how Kalamazoo RESA can improve the quality of life for students in the Kalamazoo area. He has a deep-seeded drive to see excellence in all of the services Kalamazoo RESA offers our students, local school districts, and the community,” Campbell said.
Brown decided to resign because he spends the winter months in Florida. “It is not without some regrets that I resign from the Board,” he said. “I am confident with the strong leadership of the Board of Education and Superintendent David Campbell, Kalamazoo RESA will continue to be a major contributor to the quality of life in our community.”
Brown’s term does not expire until June 30, 2017, so the Board will appoint someone to fill his seat. Anyone interested must submit a completed application to the Kalamazoo RESA Superintendent’s Office, 1819 E. Milham Ave., Portage, by Monday, October 10, 2016, at noon. Applications are available at here.
Following a review of submitted applications, the Board will schedule interviews. Anyone with questions concerning the role of the Board and the responsibilities of a Board member can contact Campbell at (269) 250-9202.
