Excellence in Special Education Awards
Sponsored by the Kalamazoo County Parent Advisory Committee (PAC), the Excellence in Special Education Awards honor educators and staff who go above and beyond their role in educating and supporting special education students.
This year, four Kalamazoo RESA staff were recognized as recipients of the esteemed award: Jen Nelsen, Speech and Language Pathologist; BJ Galbraith, Valley Center School Program Assistant; Shavonn Bradley, Young Adult Program (YAP) Special Education Teacher; and Denene Huff, YAP Paraprofessional.
These awards are especially meaningful as the recipients are nominated by students and their families.
Ms. Nelsen, an offsite Speech and Language Pathologist who works primarily at Portage Northern Middle School, was nominated by parents Tina Robbins and Logan Hampton for her creative guidance and unending support of their son, Logan, to create more opportunities for him to interact with his general education peers.
Valley Center's program assistant Ms. Galbraith was recognized by a parent for her “professional manner, exceptional attitude, patience and above-level awareness of best practices in all areas of her role.”
YAP’s Ms. Bradley was described as a beacon of light to R. John Paul’s son, Emmet. “I have witnessed unparalleled growth in Emmet’s interpersonal skills for which we are profoundly grateful,” he explained.
Nominated twice, by a student and parent, Ms. Huff was recognized for her characteristic kindness and willingness to go above and beyond for her students. “Denene is so kind to my son and very dedicated to his success. She gives the students a sense of belonging and support. She brings out the best in everyone,” said YAP parent Sara Batker.
Congratulations to all who were recognized and thank you for constant commitment to our programs, students, families and community.
