Partnership Between WoodsEdge Learning Center and Gull Lake Schools Fosters Inclusion and Growth

A collaboration between WoodsEdge Learning Center and Gull Lake Community Schools is opening doors to deeper inclusion and meaningful connections for one student, Madison Riebel.

This fall, the two school teams partnered to design and implement an Individualized Education Program (IEP) focused on communication, social connection, and inclusive learning opportunities. The goal: to support Madison’s growth while creating authentic pathways for her to engage with peers in her home school district.

Each week, Madison spends a half day at her local school—joining classmates, building friendships, and exploring new learning environments. Her IEP team, including educators from both schools and her parents, meets monthly to celebrate progress, review data, and collaborate on next steps.

After just three visits, the results were remarkable. Madison joined her peers at the homecoming pep rally—surrounded by cheering classmates and smiles. Her team described her as “radiant with happiness.”

While there have been challenges, such as adapting Physical Education activities, the collaboration has been proactive and solution-driven. WoodsEdge’s Physical Therapist and Adapted PE Teacher partnered with Gull Lake’s PE staff to observe, adapt, and develop strategies that ensure Madison thrives.

Madison’s parents say they’ve seen tremendous social and emotional growth, and the partnership has strengthened relationships among families, educators, and specialists.

“This partnership is more than a schedule adjustment—it’s a story of belonging,” said Megan Lozen, a special education coordinator at KRESA. “It shows what’s possible when we work together with a shared vision of inclusion, dignity, and joy in learning.”
