One Student’s Success Inspires Transformational Growth Across KRESA Programs
What began as a search for better support for a single student with complex needs has grown into a transformative initiative that is positively impacting students, educators, and support staff across KRESA.
In the search for additional strategies to support a student whose needs required a more specialized approach, KRESA connected with FTF Behavioral Consulting, a company that helped develop Skill-Based Treatment (SBT), an evidence-based, trauma-informed approach to behavior support that emphasizes safety, dignity, and meaningful skill development.
While KRESA staff were familiar with the approach, they had not been formally trained. KRESA contracted directly with the researchers, to implement techniques not yet publicly released through broader training programs.
The results were remarkable.
“The progress we saw with that student was incredible,” said Sarah Pierce, Behavior Support Specialist. “What stood out to me most was that Skill-Based Treatment is trauma-informed, moves at the student’s pace, and is based on student assent. We prioritize ensuring students are willing and comfortable participating while supporting the well-being of both students and staff.”
Recognizing the success of the approach with one student, KRESA expanded its commitment to Skill-Based Treatment. Pierce, two behavior technicians, and two teachers participated in a Train-the-Trainer program, providing them with in-depth knowledge and practical expertise to bring back to their colleagues.
Since completing the training, the team has worked closely with educators and support staff throughout KRESA to thoughtfully implement Skill-Based Treatment strategies in classrooms and learning environments.
“What started as support for one student has turned into something much bigger,” Sarah said. “We have learned so much through this process, and now we are helping teachers across programs implement these strategies in ways that are thoughtful, responsible, and sustainable.”
Educators and staff report positive outcomes with the approach, which focuses on building skills, fostering trust, and creating supportive learning environments that benefit everyone involved.
As implementation continues to grow, KRESA remains committed to ensuring the practice is introduced carefully and with fidelity, creating opportunities for more students and staff to experience its benefits.
“This journey demonstrates the power of being open to learning and investing in innovative supports,” Sarah said. “One student’s success opened the door to a transformation that is helping many more students thrive.”
