Celebrate Martin Luther King’s legacy by adding to a community art project

Kalamazoo Calendar Project artist Peter Brakeman created this artwork featuring prominent Black history icons (writers, artists, musicians, activists) as a way of celebrating Black History month.

Starting on MLK Jr Day and continuing through the end of Black History Month, this project will bring together voices from KRESA, our local school partners, and our community to celebrate and build knowledge of the important Black figures in our community and across history.

We invite you to join us in further investigating these and other important Black icons by:

  1. Reviewing the images of these important people in history.

  2. Considering who you are already familiar with.

  3. Reflecting on who would you like to learn about?

  4. Contributing: Share what you learned about this icon and their contributions to history.

  5. Contributing: Who would you add? (see block 28)

Submit your response(s) here

All responses will be compiled into a web page on the KRESA website.

The Calendar Project is featured as a work of art in the Education for the Arts annual repertory program and EFA Presents! this school year. Teaching artists and classroom teachers will collaborate on lessons incorporating the project for students across the county. Learn more about the Calendar Project HERE.
