Building a Program Around Strengths: Conor’s Story

The journey Conor has taken through Kalamazoo Regional Educational Service Agency (KRESA) Transition Services is a powerful example of what is possible when students are truly listened to, valued, and supported as individuals.
After transitioning to KRESA from another county, Conor joined the Transition Services program at age 24 with limited eligibility time remaining. From the start, the focus was clear: build a program around who Conor is, how he communicates, and what helps him feel comfortable, engaged, and joyful in his day-to-day experiences.
The KRESA Transition Services team partnered closely with Conor, his family, and his group home staff to better understand his preferences, strengths, and communication style. Through consistent collaboration and deep respect for his voice, Conor played an active role in shaping a personalized program that reflected his needs and interests. This included offering learning opportunities outside of traditional work hours and continually adjusting supports to ensure meaningful participation.
Regular bimonthly meetings with Conor’s family ensured that communication remained strong and that everyone working with him stayed aligned. This partnership allowed the team to respond thoughtfully and flexibly; refining supports in ways that honored Conor’s independence and agency.
Over the past year, Conor has demonstrated meaningful growth across multiple areas of his life. He has increased his participation in community‑based activities and shown greater confidence in trying new experiences. He has also made progress in identifying emotions and using coping strategies, highlighting the impact of consistent, individualized supports.
As Conor prepares to exit the program this June, he does so with strong connections to his community. He is thriving at two community volunteer job sites where he contributes meaningfully and feels valued. He is also successfully connected with community agencies that will support his transition into adulthood with meaningful work, recreation, and supportive living arrangements.
Conor’s story reflects not only these outcomes, but also the effectiveness of inclusive, student‑centered programming. His enthusiasm,

sense of humor, and genuine happiness—often shared through a wide smile—are powerful indicators of a program that honors his strengths and supports his independence.
KRESA Transition Services is proud to celebrate Conor and honored to have been part of his journey.
