Alumni In Action: William McClellan
At just 19 years old, William McClellan has his own apartment, car, and a full-time career as the lead custodian at Kalamazoo RESA’s Valley Center School. It all started when he decided to explore his interest in hands-on careers through Kalamazoo RESA’s Career Connect programs.
William’s career journey began in the Career & Technical Education (CTE) Automotive Technology class before he transitioned into Early/Middle College (EMC). While exploring his options, he connected with EMC Career Coach Dawon Sharp, who, alongside the Career Connect team, helped William secure a CTE Work-Based Learning position on Kalamazoo RESA’s maintenance team.
“When I first started, they kind of put me right into it,” William said. “I was doing the ceiling tiles downstairs, and then I went from doing that to helping with some of the electrical.”
His strong work ethic and quick learning immediately made an impression on his crew.
“He stepped up to the plate,” Greg Veeder, KRESA Maintenance Technician, said. “Quick learner, smart kid. Thank God he came here to work because we love him.”
William’s dedication quickly earned him a full-time position on the maintenance team. From there, he kept learning, growing, and giving his all at work every day. When the lead custodian position opened at Valley Center School, William went for it and got the job.
For William, the combination of his strong work ethic, career coaching, hands-on work experience, and strong mentorship from the KRESA team helped to transform his future.
“I am very appreciative of them allowing me to come and help,” William said. “Their input, mentoring me, and helping me through a lot of stuff. I appreciate everything that they’ve helped me with.”
