• Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

    Kalamazoo residents can receive quality Volunteer Income Tax Assistance for free! Review the eligibility requirements listed below to select the service that is best for you:

    Traditional In-person Appointments

    • IRS-certified VITA volunteers assist with tax preparation
    • Household income of $58,000 or less
    • Disabled, employed, received unemployment benefits, or have a dependent child 17 years old or younger
    • Face mask required

    Anytime, Anywhere Self-preparation

    • Prepare your own return
    • No income limit, appointment or waiting in line required
    • Most tax forms available

    • Support available 10am – 10pm daily by phone at 866-698-9435

    Guided Self-preparation In-person

    • No income limit
    • Access to computer and internet provided
    • IRS-certified VITA volunteers available in-person to help you navigate the tax preparation software and answer tax questions that are in-scope for the program
    • Face mask required
    • Available mid-February through mid-April
    • Space is limited; Pre-registration required

    Walk-in Wednesday; February 1 – April 13, 2022 
    Michigan Works Southwest 1601 S Burdick St

    • Starts 9am each Wednesday
    • While-you-wait or Drop-off Service available, Intake Interview required
    • First 20 who meet all requirements will be served each week
    • Household income of $58,000 or less
    • Disabled, employed, receive unemployment benefits, have retirement income reported on form 1099-R, or have a dependent child 17 years old or younger
    • Present all required identification and tax documents
    • Face mask required
    • It is recommended you pick up and complete an intake packet in advance; Intake packet may be pick up Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm

    Remote Preparation by Appointment

    • Household income of $58,000 or less
    • Disabled, employed, or have a dependent child 17 years old or younger
    • Due to a hardship is unable to attend in-person; proof of hardship may be required
    • Limited availability, Eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis, service is not guaranteed 
    • Internet access and a valid email address required
